Bill C-34 Safe Social Media Act – Child-friendly Version

On June 10, 2026, the Canadian government tabled the Safe Social Media Act to help keep children safe online. Because this bill directly affects children, they have the right to understand what it means in language that makes sense to them.

Therefore, we created this child-friendly guide to help young people understand exactly what this bill is about, and what is happening in the Canadian parliament.

Inside, you will find a simple breakdown of the new rules for social media and AI companies proposed by the government, including:

  • An 18-month “temporary ban” on accounts for users under 16
  • Rules imposed on social media & AI companies
  • The role of the new Digital Safety Commission

Most importantly, we’ve included thought-provoking discussion questions to help kids reflect on these changes.

Your voice matters!

As a child, you have a right to participate in the decisions that impact your digital life. We want to hear what you think about this new Bill.
